About Dr. Townsend
Dr. Townsend received his medical degrees from the University of Liverpool, Faculty Of Medicine, England. He completed his US equivalent residency training and Board Certification in both General Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology in London and Edinburgh. He served a Clinical Fellowship program inGynecologic Oncology at the University of Miami, Florida.
His faculty appointments have included Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida, College of Medicine, Tampa followed by Director of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver.
He returned to Tampa and conducted a private practice for more than 10 years in gynecology, gynecological surgery and oncology before returning to England in 2002. This followed his acceptance of the position of Consultant in Gynecological Oncology at the well known teaching hospitals of Guys and St. Thomas' in London. In 2004/2005, as part of the British Government's initiative to improve cancer care in England, he was a lead physician for promoting the care of women with gynecological cancers. In this role, he helped develop one of 34 Cancer Care Networks in which each would serve a population of some 1.5 million,
Dr. Townsend returned to the Tampa area in 2005 to again conduct a private practice in gynecology and gynecological oncology. His office is located in Brooksville.
Dr. Townsend is the author and presenter of medical journal articles and public speaking topics respectively that relate to the detection, prevention and treatment of women's cancers.
He holds patents on three inventions being developed by industry. They include a device for reversible sterilization of the woman and an invention to improve the operation of pelvic prolapse repair. Finally a device that will give to surgeons a fundamentally new way of fastening tissues instead of sutures, staples or glue.
